One man is dead and another is injured after police say a driver lost control of his vehicle while allegedly street racing in Minneapolis.

Authorities say Calvin Forest was driving a red Camaro around 10:48p.m. Tuesday on Spring Street in northeast Minneapolis when he lost control and hit the vehicle of Daniel Hardy, who was also allegedly involved in the street race. The impact caused Hardy to lose control of his own vehicle.

Burt Weldon saw Hardy drive over the curb, hit a tree and a bystander, before he was thrown from the vehicle. Witnesses said Hardy was not wearing a seat belt during the race.

“I’ve heard of small stuff, like a wheel falling off, nothing like this. This was, this was bad. This was really bad,” said Burt Weldon, who witnessed the crash.

Weldon was one of the first to try to help Hardy as he lay unconscious near his damaged vehicle.

“I was tearing up. Oh yeah, when I sat next to him, I was choking up. All that blood. He was bleeding pretty bad from his head. It was hard,” said Weldon.

The bystander, identified as Stu Mack, is currently in satisfactory condition. Paramedics attempted to resuscitate Hardy, but he was later pronounced dead at North Memorial. Forest remains in fair condition.
Witnesses say they think both Forest and Hardey were going at least 100 mph before they lost control.

“It makes me question not just the safety, but also the driver should know what they’re handling,” said Weldon.

Forest, a sportscaster for KSTP TV, is also known for being an avid racer. Those present during the race were surprised that he lost control. Eyewitnesses reported him being unusually "twitchy" just before the race, though toxicology reports came back negative with regards to drugs or alcohol.

Those in the racing community say Weldon usually doesn’t race — in fact, many say they’ve never seen him drive before. According to police reports, the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 that Weldon was driving was not owned by him and was among the vehicles that were reported stolen a few weeks ago.

Police said this area, which is considered the mid-city industrial neighborhood, is a popular for street racing.

Police said they are working on outreach and enforcement with area businesses, but street racing locations move around and happen sporadically.
