2010 Coordinator Application

INTRODUCTION:

Hello!

My name is Kayti Lake Holley, and I am awesome! I have been an active part of the One

World by Night Organization for many years, and would be honored to be able to serve as

Toreador Coordinator for the coming term. Some people know my PCs, I portray Tiffany

Cole, Toreador, and Theadora Carlisle, Brujah.

Administrative background:

OWBN Experience, Administrative:

Storyteller/Head Storyteller/Council Member: Tuscola, Buried Destiny; Jan. 1998 – Jan.

2000. Although this game does not represent the beginning of my LARP career, it does

represent my first administrative experience in OWBN, and I spent the majority of my term

challenging myself to continually improve the level of this game. As a testament to my

efforts, the game had more than 60 regular players at the end of my term, and was often

referred to as “the Babylon 5” of the Midwest, as lots of people who would never normally

meet traveled to Tuscola.

Midwest Storyteller meeting, 1999: To further the cooperation between games in our local

area, I planned and coordinated a meeting for all the storytellers for games throughout the

Midwest. More than 20 storytellers attended, and we were joined by then-Head Coordinator,

Duncan “Dunx” Wiley. The meeting was very productive; for example, the storytellers

present agreed to all honor strikes given by other Midwest games. During this meeting we

also defined Article 10 (“accepting the consequences”). It was a successful starting ground

for getting the Midwest storytellers on the same page.

Springfield Conclave, 2001: This conclave still represents one of the largest and most

significant event games in OWBN’s history, with more than 400 players in attendance, and I

am proud to have served on the administrative team for the event. At the time, my PC,

Tiffany Cole, was Prince of Springfield, and I assisted the storytelling team with the

organization and execution of the event, helping with everything from event promotion to

decorating.

Storyteller: Springfield, Capital City Cauldron; Sept. 2004 - Feb. 2005. While serving on the

Springfield storyteller team, my primary role was to serve as mediator between players in

Springfield and players from afar when the need arose. I also guided the players through

several story lines that lasted throughout my tenure.

Storyteller/Head Storyteller : Springfield Ashes Chronicle; Aug 2006-July 2009 Founded and

ran this game through it's entirety. Moving and having a long commute for work being my

primary reason for walking away.

Toreador SubCoord: December 2008-present. I have worked with Loopy quite well over the

years, this year accepting a "titled" position. Coordinating new players, and helping them find

their way in the Clan structure was my primary task. I portrayed a number of NPCs during

my time as SubCoord, and assisted in the culmination of a decade long plot.

Listserve Moderator- CiET- IC, CiET-OOC, Spfld- IC, and Spfld-OOC. I have held the role

of moderator for these lists for many years.

OWBN Experience, Toreador Clan:

I have been very involved with the Toreador Clan over the past eleven years, primarily

through interaction with my Toreador PC, Tiffany Cole. Tiffany has been active in the Clan

through several key changes over the years, including the formation of the Toreador Guild,

the Justicarial transition from Madame Guil to Petronius, the death of Madame Guil, the

appearance of Katherine de Montpellier and more. I believe that my long-term experience

with the Toreador Clan lends me a perspective that is critical for the administration of the

Clan from a Coordinator level.

OWBN Experience, Other Clans:

I started LARPing in late 1996, in the Champaign, IL game, and have been a regular

attendant at OWbN games ever since. While I have played Tiffany for a number of years, I

have also played several other characters in other clans and games throughout OWBN. To

give you a sense of my range, I played Christa/#13 of Clan Nosferatu, a Sabbat character

(although Christa has since been retired to NPC status), and Marie O’ Faulken of Clan

Ventrue, in addition to several other characters from several other clans. My current primary

PC is Theadora Carlisle of Clan Brujah. In addition, I have visited many games throughout

the country, from D.C. to San Francisco, and many games in between. I feel that these

experiences have prepared me to approach the Toreador from a well-rounded viewpoint,

including perspectives from other Clans and games.

Experience, Other LARP:

I have run several independent short-term LARPs, as well as OWbN and Ashes games. I

have also been a theatre junkie my whole life; my mother was in two plays while pregnant

with me…so she claims I was performing before I was even born. I have experienced all

sides of the theatrical world. I am also slated to teach a Community Education Class for

Lincoln Land Community College on V:TM LARP.

Personal Statement:

ADMINISTRATIVE PHILOSOPHY:

Given my time playing a PC within the Toreador Clan, I feel that the Clan has a strong

foundation and excellent structure – I would like to assist the Toreador players in using this

existing foundation to its fullest extent, and helping the Clan grow in numbers and political

position. The Toreador have been lucky to have some amazing Coordinators over the last

several years, who’ve allowed the players to move and shift the Clan to fit their own mold. In

my opinion, it is the most PC-story-driven Clan in OWBN, and I would hate to see that

change. As Toreador Coordinator, I intend to refrain from making any large changes to the

Clan from an administrator level; instead, I feel strongly that a Coordinator should guide the

PCs in enacting their own desired changes. I also feel that NPCs are best used to gently

guide PCs toward upholding those elements of genre that are included in the OWBN Council

bylaws.

GOALS FOR 2010:

I am hoping to work closely with the other Coordinators, especially Setite and Ventrue, to

create stimulating and satisfying story for all of the players to enjoy. I intend to continue the

storylines set up by Loopy, ensuring that there is continuity while the plot develops. I also

intend to have some minor shake ups that I believe will cause delightfully devious ripple

effects for all of the Clan. I believe that my strong communication skills would be a large

asset to the Coordinator team as a whole.

I currently do not plan to create a new packet. I do however, intend to put together (with the

help of SubCoords) an OWbN Toreador Player's guide, to include some of the OWbN

Toreador History. The current packet will be updated, I just am not planning to recreate the

wheel.

I also would like to create 2 new positions within the Clan, outside of the Guild. An Artiste

Premier and A Poseur Premier. There are Toreador who choose not to use the Guild for their

character, I believe it would be nice for those Toreador to get some structure and guidance

IC. I do intend for these to be PC positions, much like the Guild Lord. These positions are not

excluded from being Guild Members, they are just also to assist and "lead" those outside of

the Guild.

The Poseur Premier would assist the Poseur characters in matters of social climbing, and

taking on leadership roles within the Camarilla. How to be the political "face" of the Clan.

Etiquette, Status, Positions, Influence, Boons, Manipulation these will be some of the

strengths I will want the Poseur Premier to relay.

The Artiste Premier would guide Artiste characters in raising the bar artistically, and using

their art to benefit the Clan. Herds, Resources, Fame, Influence, these can all be accrued via

art, when used well. I would like for the Artiste Premier to guide the development and uses of

art.

When asked recently, what I *want* for the Toreador, my reply was this:

"I have been part of the Toreador Clan in one facet or another for 12 or so years of my life. I

am passionate about the genre, I have always loved it.

I have some, shall I say deliciously devious, plans in mind for the Clan. I *want* back biting,

back handed compliments, snark, yet climbing society at breakneck speed.

I want the "Phone Tree of Social Destruction," to be something other Clans fear.

"With a little sugar, darlin' there is no need to place that call." *bats eyes*

Simply put, I love it, and I want to help guide it. I don't want to RUN them, I want to guide

them towards a manipulative, artistic, catty, FUN place :)"

SUBCOORDINATOR TEAM:

A well-rounded, strong team is vital to the success of any Coordinator…no one can succeed

alone. As such, I intend to maintain much of the solid team that has supported Clan Toreador

over the past several years, and use their experience and knowledge to maintain continuity for

the players.

Loopy carried the Clan in a way that seemed impossible. While she was at the helm the Clan

grew and changed gracefully, and we never even saw the sweat on her brow…it was truly

masterful. As no one could do it better, Loopy has offered to remain on the team as the

Legacy SubCoord!

Angela Allen, the current Web Mistress for the Toreador Page has graciously said she would

work with me! We have a beautiful page, and I am excited to what else we can do with it!

RECOMMENDATIONS:

“In my time with Clan Toreador in OWbN, from player to coord and everything in between,

Kayti has been one of the few constants in a continually changing tapestry. Over the years,

whether as a player or an ST, she has consistently remained dedicated to the ideal that the

players should be the people telling the story for Clan Toreador. She's a pro at getting

everything right the first time, she knows the bylaws inside and out, and her personal

charisma and demeanor make working with her a thoroughly rewarding experience.” ~Rick

Klagstad, Toreador Coordinator, 2003-2005

“During my time as Coordinator, Kayti was a driving force behind the Clan when playing her

Toreador PC. Working with her as a storyteller and an administrator was always a pleasure –

Kayti uses her pragmatic and positive attitude to find the very best blend of plot that is fun for

the players and easy to administrate. She knows the Toreador Clan inside and out, and her

passion for the Clan shows through to this very day. It is my honor to recommend her and

support her for the position of Toreador Coordinator.” ~ Jen “Loopy” Smith, outgoing

Toreador Coordinator.

“Kayti has a very pleasant, non-confrontational demeanor, which is an asset that has served

her well as a player and a storyteller over the years. She is very educated on how the clan

functions locally, regionally and globally. She is very forward-thinking when it comes to the

bigger picture and thinking outside the box. Her greatest asset is her ability to be calm under

pressure, which is certainly something this position requires more often than not.” ~ Stefanie

Pursell, former OWbN Historian. current Kuei Jin Coordinator.

“Kayti Holley has not only played the longest-running Toreador Prince in OWbN history, but

she has an outstanding grasp of Toreador genre. She has been a shining example of such both

as a player and as a Storyteller. I feel that she would make the best possible candidate in the

organization currently.” ~ Nate Franklin, (wearer of many hats)

“I have personally known Kayti for quite some time and in that time have known her both as

an ST and a PC. I sincerely believe that Kayti has a keen grasp of the Toreador, the

consistency and knowledge to keep them a first tier Clan, and the creativity to take them into

this new era in OWbN. At a time when White Wolf has ended their story and our own is has

begun, I feel that Kayti is the best possible choice to lead the charge while still holding true to

the integrity of the Toreador Coordinator's office.” ~ Robert Crosby, ST Springfield, IL

“Kayti Lake Holley is a LARPer’s LARPer. In my experience as both her Storyteller and as a

player under her Storytelling she has always brought a touch of class to the game. This is not

to say that she is not willing to get her hands dirty. She has always been the type of person to

“stick by her guns” and/or back up anyone that she supports. Her knowledge of the

Masquerade genre and more specifically the Toreador Clan will make her an excellent choice

as Coordinator.”~ Derek Howard, Caught in the Eternal Twilight Head Storyteller; Subcoord

for both the Gangrel and the Ventrue offices.

IN CLOSING:

I really believe that I could do good things in this position, and would be honored if you

would give me the chance. I know the genre, I love the genre. I really believe that the

Toreador would benefit from my experience, and knowledge. If you have additional

questions or comments for me, please feel free to contact me at kaytilake@gmail.com.

Coordinator Position Applied For: Toreador Coordinator
Applicant Name: Monica Marlowe

Applicant Email: janetlyndon@gmail.com

Applicant Home Chronicle: Shadows of Cincinnati
Introduction/Background:

I played in OWbN briefly in 1998 and later rejoined in September 2001. After the attacks in New York and DC I realized that I was missing something in my life and wanted to reconnect with friends and build new relationships. I have played in WW based LARP and table top since 1998. My favorite table top genre is actually Werewolf: The Apocalypse, but I feel that the political maneuvering of Vampires very much begs for player interactions that can only be achieved through LARP.

My first PC of note was a Toreador, Isabelle Deveaux. It was at that time that I fell in love with the Clan, characters and players alike. Within weeks of losing my PC I became the Midwest Toreador subcoordinator under Kenny Lull. Since then I have served under Loopy for Team Tory and joined Team Cam with T. Doug and Alan’s current team. In addition to playing Isabelle Deveaux, I played Parker Glim, Nosferatu and currently play the Malkavian, Janet Lyndon and to a lesser extent Moira X, Nosferatu.

In my other life, outside of game, I am a mother of two small children and I am an RN. These two have opened my eyes to the vast diversity that the world has to offer. I spend each day helping people learn to care for themselves, whether it’s learning to tie their shoes, eat with a fork or learning how to walk again with a new hip joint. Being able to communicate on many levels and listening have become increasingly important to me and valuable skills that I bring to the table.

Last year was a difficult time for me. I had a great deal of stress and loss in my personal life. It changed the way I think about what it means to be serious and when to have fun. I learned a lot about how to deal with myself and others, how to handle issues when they arose unexpectedly and to know when to let things go.

I feel that a genre Coordinator should be available to help STs who have questions about aspects of their specific genre and develop compelling plots/NPCs to further local storylines; to help players create intriguing characters that they will enjoy playing in our shared universe; and provide valuable feedback to other Coordinators and Council on matters of genre interactions. Open lines of communication are essential for all of these things to work, both listening and talking. I have good relationships with most of the current Coordinator staff and feel that I can add positively to the mix.

Administrative Experience:

Subcoordinator for Clan Toreador since 4/2006, under Kenny Lull and Loopy Smith

Sub coordinator / List Mod for Camarilla Coordinator since 8/2008, under T. Doug and Alan Pursell

Council Member for Cincinnati: 2006-2008

I began my time on Team Toreador as the Midwest Subcoordinator for Kenny. I kept tabs on the clan and took new PCs under my wing, helping them make connections in and out of the clan player base. When Loopy rejoined Team Toreador the next year, circumstances beyond our control left just the two of us to run the administration of Clan Toreador. I was given the lists, new players and Guild oversight while Loopy did the heavy lifting. This responsibility gave me the opportunity to work closely with the Storytellers and players on a new level.

At this time I ran the opening act of the Jack the Barber/Sweeney Todd plotline. Loopy and I worked very closely together on this project. It was encouraging to see that we were on very much the same wavelength. The storyline was well received by the player base and storytellers alike. In addition I portray ongoing NPCs that provided interactions between the upper echelons of the Clan and traveled to Chicago to assist the ST staff there with the after math of the Art Institute bombing and followed through for the Shade execution and wrap up. I have organized several large and small scenes, both online and during events/games to promote role play opportunities.

The need for a new, updated Clan website led me to introduce Angela, our current web mistress, to Loopy shortly after the last election. I cannot take any credit for Angela’s outstanding vision but I do love her website and hope she will remain on staff with the new Administration.

In addition to my time in the org, I have played in countless independent games and served as storyteller in a couple.

I have mentioned several times in my application that open communications are very important to me. I take the process of sharing information very seriously in my working life as the lives of others depend upon my ability to communicate to and receive messages from other people. Patients know their bodies better than anyone else, usually, and to discount their information is a waste of a valuable resource. I will approach my communications with chronicles, council and other coordinators the same way. Storytellers and Council members know their games much better than I ever could. I will listen to all requests and concerns with an open mind. In situations of conflicts, I will listen to both sides of the story. However, I will also ask questions. Nothing happens in a vacuum and decisions cannot be made without all pertinent information. My goal for every conflict is to be resolved through talking about issues and reaching an acceptable agreement between all involved parties, whether storytellers, council members, other coordinators or players.

Goals:

Clan Toreador is a vibrant group of players who know best how to push their own buttons. They rarely need help getting into or out of trouble. My goals as Toreador Coordinator are to keep the Clan bubbling just below the boiling point. They do not need much stirring, just someone to keep an eye on them to make sure they clean up after themselves or make them wish they had.

The next term appears to be shaping up to be very important for the Clan and the Camarilla. With the destruction of Shade for crimes against the Camarilla, the claiming of the Extremis Boon and the rising issues with naughty Archons possibly leading to another Conclave, I feel that this year is going to provide all the excitement Clan Toreador is going to need without any specific additions from the Coordinator's office. The best part of playing Vampire is allowing everyone to be as evil, deceptive and manipulative as possible without being deceived or manipulated one’s self.

Unlike other Clans, Clan Toreador has two hierarchies and those two structures do not always get along or agree completely on the methods by which goals can and should be achieved. There have been some ideas in the works with the current staff that I would like to see played out. The Guild is about to see a changing of the guard, as well as receive an injection of player initiated mayhem. I look forward to seeing how the players will respond to both circumstances, but to go any further here would reveal more than I am willing to say at this time.

I do not view NPCs as everyday attire, they are special evening wear. They shouldn’t be pulled out every time something goes wrong and certainly not used to protect player characters (or other NPCs) who have been called to task about personal actions. That is not to say that I won’t let Petronius and Ophelia go out to play from time to time, but I feel that each time such NPCs make public appearances diminishes the mystique of the Elders. I need to weigh that loss of mystery against the powerful statement that the presence of high ranking NPCs can make and base my decisions on that balance.

My hope is that each member of the current Team will continue through into the next term, regardless of who wins the election. They are an awesome group of individuals who have done an excellent job and worked well as a team. It is my intention to invite Loopy to fill the traditional role as Legacy Sub-coordinator. I couldn’t imagine Clan Toreador without her presence.

We are still without an approved Clan Packet and I would very much like to put that last piece of unfinished work to rest. It has haunted me for the past two years and it is my hope to clean up some of the issues I have with the current packet and have something WW acceptable to get to potential players and storytellers alike.

Personal Statement:

I have a deep love for this game and the people who play in it. Most of my long standing personal friends I have made through this organization or other similar games. It is my goal to add to the general enjoyment of others in our shared imaginary unlives. I believe that being the Toreador Coordinator will allow me to continue the work that I have begun under Kenny and continued through with Loopy. I look forward to another exciting year in OWbN. Below you will find the official support I require by the bylaws and below that, I have had several people who have offered personal accounts of their interactions with me as a subcoordinator, I have included only a few.

Statements of personal support:

"Monica has been my bedrock subcoordinator over the past two years. When I get overwhelmed, I can trust on her dedication to the job and willingness to collaborate in order to keep things moving in a healthy direction.” - Jen 'Loopy' Smith, Toreador Coordinator

“I met Monica through the interactions of our Toreador PCs in about 2005. She worked with me get the Toreador website up and running officially. She's a great person to work with on plot or if you just want to chat.” - Angela Allen, player of Lydia Trent, Toreador and Web Mistress Extraordinaire

“I think that she has also shown that she cares about the individual story of each player in Clan Toreador, and will understand the balance between letting the players do what they do best, and managing the genre she would be responsible for.” – Heather Santoro, player of Angel LaRouge, Toreador

“I would like to officially state my support for Monica Marlowe for Toreador Coord. In my nearly 7 years with the Org, I have been ally and adversary to Isabel Deveaux, her Toreador PC. I have also count her as a good friend out of character. She has always been a reliable source of advice regarding not only rule mechanics and org politics, but also character and story development.
She makes plots available to players without forcing it upon them. In a clan that features so many dynamic and creative players, there is very little need for top-down plot. I do not doubt that should the players require it, Monica would be more than creative enough to provide such plot.
I encourage all of you to support Monica Marlowe for Toreador Coord.” – Christina Brucker, player of Cassandra Sumner, Toreador

“I believe her natural love of the Toreador Clan and her history as not only a long standing former Torrie character but her continued involvement as a sub coord for a few years gives her the insight that would help continue the 'Fun' clan down an enjoyable path.” – Sandy Johnson, player of Faith Williams, Toreador

“She has a love for the clan and I believe she will do a smashing job to continue moving the genre forward in the right direction.” – Mark Tippett, player of Clarence Williams, former Toreador

“Cannot support you on account of you giving my ashes to Clarence. If it wasn't for that, you could officially say ‘Candidacy endorsed by Percy!’” – Schatzie, player of Percy Lake, former Toreador (no Dark Thaumaturgy was exchanged for this ‘not quite an endorsement’ endorsement).

“In ten plus years of playing in owbn I've only ever seen one coord not only worth interacting with, but damn good. That of course is Loopy. The only sub coord I've ever had good valid positive interactions with however, with no negative always true to genre interactions no matter what I was playing was Monica. Monica is a damn good player and coord and true to genre.” – Chad Korbar, former player of Juno, Toreador

“I have known Monica for a few years now. I am not an ST and I have no administrative experience in the org, but I have played in numerous games with numerous STs and I deal with coords regularly as a PC. It really is as a PC that I come to think about what I would want in a Coord. Monica has, what I believe, are the most important qualities that I look for when looking to work with a Coord. She is willing to hear multiple opinions. She is enthusiastic and willing to be assertive. She is creative and seems to always remember that there must be a balance between good story that is fun for players and maintaining some degree of genre (even in OWBN). She is EXTREMELY fast on emails, which makes working with her as a PC a pleasure. She knows a lot of the people in the org, which is always helpful. Monica simply has a skill set that would be extremely valuable when leading a clan or the org as a whole. I believe she would be an invaluable addition to the coord staff.” – Michael Bernstein, player of Archon Jacob Black, Malkavian

Coordinator Position Applied For: Toreador Coordinator
Applicant Name: Brian Orlando
Applicant Email: BrianFromWA{at}yahoo.com
Applicant Home Chronicle: Tampa: Under Night’s Cloak

Introduction/Background:
I have been involved in OWbN since 2003, and have played a broad range of characters, from a sneaky Setite, to a shrewd Ventrue, to an over-the-top Toreador. I also like to travel and like to experience how different games run things.

Administrative Experience:

I have served as Council Member for the Tampa: Under Night's Cloak chronicle for over 3 years and was a Storyteller in the Tampa game for about 5. Outside of game, I work in Software Development, which consists of lots of team-oriented tasks and lots of stress and deadlines… which is great experience for this job.

Goals:

1. I would push Toreador players to climb to the top of the political ladder. I would do this by supporting their efforts with clan Elders, and by making sure that the Political (PC) superstars of the clan continued to reach out to new players.

2. I would ensure that up-and-coming Toreador PC’s have the opportunity to shine by featuring presentations of their works at special events (hopefully held at National Events).

3. I would push to make Toreador the clan everyone wants to play by sponsoring travelling shows/galleries/performances that people want to see, and want to be a part of. This plot hook would work equally for the Cam/Anarchs (performances/galleries), and the Sabbat (freakshow/re-enactments).

4. I would punish quietly, and reward publically, Toreador who accomplish great things while remaining scandal-free. I would work with the Cam Coord to promote boons, reputations, and seventh personal.

5. I would hire a subcoord for each national plotline that I start/run, so that it did not lose focus or direction. The one plotline/NPC/duty would be that subcoord’s sole responsibility.

6. I would support every OWbN National event in and out of character, and I would personally travel to each event to show support, and to have fun!

7. All this included, I would ask the Toreador players (maybe at OOC workshops held online and/or at National Events) what they would like, and where they’d like to take the genre, then include that in my plan.

Personal Statement:
I want to providing a fun and professionally-run environment for the players. I want to empower the storytellers, giving them the tools and encouragement they need to have the best possible experience. When mediation is necessary, I will strive for compromise and mutual agreements, rather than simply backing one side or another.

What I would like to accomplish is to make the Toreador clan more fun and engaging to play… not just to draw in new players, but to also keep the old ones interested.

If you have questions, please just ask. Thanks for reading!
