Applicant Name: Trey Naivar
Applicant Email: wnaivar@gmail.com
Applicant Home Chronicle: Whispers of Atlanta

Background:

I joined OWbN in 2002 as a part of Whispers of Atlanta. I play
mostly in the Georgia/Florida area, but I try to attend at least one
OWBN event a year if not more in order to experience more of what the
org and its members have to offer.

Aside from the local positions I've held in my home chronicle
(narrator, AST, HST, CM), I have been a Subcoord in the Setite office
for 2 years, as well as the Ravnos office. I've also joined the Ventrue
team as a subcoord for a year and had the duties of running the
Society of the Hague, as well as offering style advice to the male
Ventrue players (I've got about 6 years experience in Menswear).

As a Ravnos subcoord I re-vamped the MET rules for mortal
gypsies with Blood Purity, as well as consulted on character backgrounds
and character approvals.

My duties as a Setite subcoord were multi-faceted; In my two
years I had substantial input into the continuing revisions done to
the Setite Sorcery packet, to the genre information regarding the
Serpents of the Light and their sorcery (Wanga and Necromancy), and have
been the main subcoord in charge of facilitating the Setite Warrior
genre.

As the Setite Coordinator, I have completely re-tooled the Setite Sorcery
packet, updated the genre packet to add more distinctiveness to each of the
setite divisions, and have begun to expand the internal roles of the clan.
I have also begun a plotline by awakening the elders of the clan, to provide
a genre guide that I feel they have lacked for a while.

My role-playing experience outside the org draws from all kinds and
corners of the subject; from some of the core of White Wolf's portfolio
(Vampire Genres, Mage, Werewolf, Wraith, Exalted, and even some of the
WoD 2.0 stuff) to games like Shadowrun, D&D, Rifts, Marvel, and several
MMORPGs. Scion is one of my new favorites.

Personal Statement:

By now, many of you may have noticed that my application seems startlingly
similar to last years. It’s true! My previous experiences have not changed,
only been added to. Fortunately, my opinions have evolved after having been
in the hot seat for a year, and I want to look back and illustrate this to
you by looking back at my app, pointing out what I’ve done, not done, plan
to do, changed, tossed out, and want to try again. The best place to start?
Right below this line!

“If elected, I intend to provide as much continuity for the players as
possible, while beginning some new projects. These projects include,
but are in no way limited to:

* Sorcery Packet Revisions (harsher rarity scales, installing
benchmarks for earning Sorcery to engender more well-rounded
characters, removing 'home-brew' rituals that are not Milk of Set
variants. Nothing will be added to this part in way of thaumaturgy
rituals/paths.)”

---Sorcery packet revisions were completed, and the rarity scales changed.
There were, of course, growing pains. I decided against the benchmarks to
earn sorcery, in favor of trying to be more open with communications between
my staff and local STs. Each time myself or my subcoords are approached for
sorcery approvals, we always ask as many questions about the situation as
possible so that we can gain a good understanding of the character, the
situation, the player’s wishes, and the ST’s wishes. This has worked out
very well so far in my opinion, by allowing information to flow back and
forth. In short, we ask the storytellers to tell us the story of the
character earning the sorcery before we approve it. ;-)
I haven’t added any new thaumaturgy to the packet, but I do want to
put in one thing; Inscribe. It seems to
fit the merchant ideal of the Setites to sell a one-use, basic ritual, and
the corruptive nature of them to extort a price you may not realize you’ve
paid for a parlor trick. I’m not married to the idea, but it seems fun. I
also want to change the Summon Sebau ritual so that it explicitly states that
a Sebau may be assigned one task that can take no longer than the night it
was summoned in, and that it returns to Du’at after it completes the task.
I did remove the player-created rituals that were not Milk of Set
variants, but I got a lot of negative feedback on that move, even though the
packet passed. What I’d like to do (and have promised some folks I would do)
is put together a list of all Milk of Set Variants and player-created
rituals. This will let others who may be thinking of creating rituals see
what is already out there, and credit creators for good work. ;-)

* Plotline to continue the recent changes and restructuring in
the Setite Clan, to aid in building off of what has come before and move
into a new day, by reconstituting the Hierophant Council and their
foils, the Decadents, with a new genre packet to support this.

---This was waylaid due to a big issue; We’re having a hard time restructuring
Setite Prestige into a way that makes sense for the clan! I’ve consulted the
players and my staff about this, and I think we are close to something
workable now. For now, I’ve taken Setite Prestige out of the latest packet and
would like to add it into the packet next term or pass it off to
whoever gets the spot.

* Plotlines to bring the role of the Setite Castes into greater
focus, with a new genre packet to support this.

---My subcoords have been working on this, but lately the players have been
taking this and running with it on their own; I’ve been working with a lot
of STs and players who are looking to NPCs to fill roles that local PCs
haven’t. So far, it’s all been one caste looking for help from the others
in situations they are more suited to.

* Work with the Sabbat and Camarilla Coordinators on plotlines
designed to highlight the position the Setites hold with both Sects
(Sabbat = enemies, Cam = customers, patsies)

--things are going well here! The Camarilla Coord and I have been in close
communications about what kind of plotlines and back-room deals can be
made to benefit both genres. The Sabbat Coord and I worked out very early
in the year to share a subcoord (many of the other coords did the same
thing, too); My Serpent of the Light Subcoord is also a Sabbat Subcoord,
so this is a constant line of communication.

* Updating of the Setite Websites

--We’ve got a new site, and are begging for player input to fill it!

* Promotion of the Setite yahoogroups available to players.

--I’m designing a plotline to both define what these lists are
in-character and to facilitate their move to a more reliable googlegroup.

* Giving a non-binding guideline for Setite Lore, for the members
of the Setite Religion, the bloodlines, and non-setites.

---This was waylaid by the Setite Prestige discussions, as I believe that
one of the functions of the Setite Lore ability would be to determine
another setite’s current prestige. Once we figure out that, and what Lore
means to the insiders, we can figure out what it means to the outsiders
as well.

My plans for a next term are simple, to continue what I’ve started.
I have GREATLY enjoyed being a Coordinator, and I think it’s the most fun
over all I’ve had in the org aside from being a player. This year has
shown me that I plan to run for Setite Coordinator until someone stops
me. :-p

1.Position Applied for: Setite Coordinator
2. Applicant Name: Jim Simons
3. Applicant Email: jsimons1975@gmail.com
4. Applicant Home Chronicle: Nocturnal Rapture. Milwaukee, WI

Greetings,

My name is Jim Simons and I am running for Setite Coordinator for 2010. I have been a member of OWbN for at least 10 years and have taken part in LARPs for 10 years. I started Role Playing in 1999 and feel that my years of involvement in dramatic improvisational theater will help me to fulfill my goal of successfully maintaining a genre which has been written and run so many different ways over the past decade. I wish to coherently unify the different views of Setites to create a standard from which the genre can then be taken forth in the coming years.

Administrative Background:

OWBN Story Teller Experience: For the past 5 years, I have been a Storyteller in Green Bay, Sheboygan, and Milwaukee. As a storyteller, I have had extensive experience as an administrator and arbitrator. I have helped to resolve problems between chronicle ST staffs on a small level within the chronicles and on a state wide level. I have also been a Storyteller in the “Midwinter” convention for several years now. In all of my ST positions my primary responsibility has been to provide good plot for as many players as possible while holding them to the rules of genre without stifling their creativity. Because of these experiences, I have learned to interact with a large number of players and chronicle staffs and have gained much experience doing what is needed to provide a good story for the players while still keeping things within the bounds of the regulations of both my chronicle and One World by Night.

OWBN Coordinator Experience:
Assamite Clan: I have been the Loyalist Sub Coordinator for two separate Assamite Coordinators . I have worked with individual chronicles to correctly involve a currently ill-used and often misunderstood portion of Assamite Genre in their game, and helped with national level plot development for the group. I have also portrayed key NPCs when required.

Wraiths: I am also currently a Sub Coordinator for wraiths which again have become an often ill used and largely misunderstood bit of genre. I have worked with individual chronicles who have had issues and questions regarding wraiths to better understand the nature of what Wraith can and cannot do, thus empowering STs who are new to the wraith genre to use them correctly. I feel that I have helped to empower the ST staffs with which I have worked so that they feel more confident in adding one more level of horror to their predominantly Vampire chronicles.

OWBN Experience: General: I started LARPing prior to OWBN's existence and joined the org in 1998 or 1999. It's been long enough I honestly could not tell you which. In those years I have played a variety of characters, some of course lasting longer than others. I have played or been responsible for administrating every clan in the game at one point or another. It has also been my intention over the years to immerse myself in each type of genre to better understand the game as a whole and to be better able to provide a good game experience to those either playing with me or whom I am running a game for.
Non OWBN Experience: I have played in and administrated several non OWBN LARP games several of which ran for 2+ years. This being said I have experienced what will and will not work in a shared universe arrangement like OWBN.

Goals: I have a few goals I would like to see come to fruition if I am elected Coordinator. The first is that without imbalancing the Org, the Setite players get the most out of their individual story. I intend to help achieve this by seeing to it the players and Storytellers understand the genre they are working within to the best of my ability. It has been a complaint voiced over several years, that at one time or another, one caste or another garners the majority of the Coordinator staff's time to the neglect of the others. Aware of this concern I intend to be very proactive about not letting it happen. Each Caste of the Setites operates separately from the other but work toward the same endgame goal, even if the methods can seem occluded to the uninitiated. It is my intention to make a much more hands free feel to Setite genre allowing it to be developed largely by the players and only reigned in should it stray too far from what is already established.

This Org is made up of a wide variety of chronicles with a dazzling array of players. What works for one game often does not work well for another. It is my feeling that a Coordinator should be just that. They should not attempt to become global Clan Storyteller, or to shoehorn players into whatever mold they feel fits them. Individual Storytellers know what works best for their specific chronicles and players and it is not my duty to tell them otherwise as long as they manage to work within the policies set up to keep them wo0rking smoothly with other games in our shared universe. More than many other clans, the Followers of Set are indeed a flock of starkly contrasting individuals many of whom have little more than faith in their God and the blood in their veins in common. To this end, I feel the individual STs of the various Setite characters within the organization know their own PCs better than I and should be the ones running their chronicle not a Coordinator from afar. Again, so long as the policies put in place to keep things from getting out of hand for the org as a whole are followed, it is again the players game and I for one do not want to see that change.

Personal Statement: My first table top PC and favorite LARP character have been Setites. I have loved the Genre since I first saw it in print and have followed each new iteration with intense interest. The bizarre mix of sex drugs, and rock and roll combined with religious fundamentalism and all the moral corruption that vampirism entails is an intoxicatingly rich plot tool to me. I want to see other STs find themselves similarly happy and comfortable with the Clan as a whole. The Followers of Set can be misguided protagonists unaware fully of the nest of vipers from whence they have come, or the insidious and corrupting arch villain at the heart of their nest of villainy. And from the office of Setite Coordinator, I hope to see both ends played out.
