OWbN Head Coordinator

Applicant Name: Eric Broome
Applicant Email: j.eric.broome@gmail.com
Applicant Home Chronicle: St. Augustine: On Haunted Ground

Introduction: In 2000, I first began playing in the Habit of Being chronicle in Milledgeville, GA, which was going through the OWbN admissions process. I was immediately hooked on LARP, and even traveled to the 2000 Conclave in Virginia, three weeks after I joined. I soon became a Narrator, and later a Storyteller in 2001 under Gabriel Balmes. When the HoB chronicle voted to leave OWbN, I worked with Gabe and many other Georgia players to establish the Whispers of Atlanta chronicle in late 2002. In 2004, when I was still playing a Ventrue PC, Amity Jones made me Southeastern Subcoord, a position I held until 2006, when I suggested Chad Whitley for the job. Upon his election as Ventrue Coord, Chad immediately brought me back as a Subcoord, and I’m proud to be part of the great team that he has assembled.

Experience, OWbN:

Administrative jobs I've held in One World by Night:

Ventrue Coordinator Office (Southern Regional Subcoordinator 04-06/London 07-present):

* Served for four Coordinators—Amity Jones, Mark Ridge, Lucas Delmont, and Chad Whitley.
* Contributed to the 2004 Dignitas and Genre packets, most significantly the Order of the Crimson Scepter and the Shepherd’s Crook.
* Worked with ST teams in Florida and Georgia as a regional subcoord to establish local Directorates in line with what was seen as the best thing for the local games.

Admissions Coordinator Office (Southern Regional Subcoordinator 07-present):

* Maintained a professional and diplomatic tone during all communication with Don Nevison.
* Currently working with Athens, GA’s Athens After Dark– Applying November 2009

In 2002, the first chronicle I joined voted to leave OWbN. Unwilling to accept this, I joined with other local players to create a new game, which I am happy to report I am still a part of. I have seen OWbN go through many changes over the years, and I will be the first to say that I don’t agree with some of them. However, I still believe in the purpose of this organization, and in serving it, and its players, to the fullest extent of my abilities.

Perhaps strongest among my qualifications to be Ventrue Coordinator is that, aside from a short (less than a year) break, I have been a subcoord since 2004. There will be no period of adjustment for me. I am on the lists. I already control NPCs. Players already know me, and I know them. The Subcoord staff knows and supports me. Aside from the occasional “I’d better ask the last guy,” moments, I’ll be operating in full swing the moment the votes close. Further, having worked with so many different Coordinators, Subcoords, players and STs over the years has given me a great insight into how to work with different people, and I have a great deal of personal experience to draw from in that regard.

Experience, Other - Personal:

Aside from my membership in OWbN, I have played numerous games of the now-very-outdated Middle Earth Role-playing Game (MERP). I have also played in long-running Star Wars RPG chronicles. I suppose both of these led to my love of RPGs no longer supported by their publishers. In addition to the above, I also have experience with D&D, Shadowrun, and Deadlands. In 2000, I was awarded an Outstanding Student Scholarship for Theatre. In 2008, I earned a Bachelor’s degree in History, which I must confess I partially earned using research that I performed primarily for OWbN.

Goals and Philosophy for 2010:

I am not interested in being an org-wide Storyteller. What I am interested in is helping Storytellers maintain an inspiring standard for Ventrue in their games, and helping Ventrue players exceed that standard. To that end, I am frequently available on Gmail and AIM. I am also aware of the current team’s often slow response time to emails. Having been on the list gives me the ability to see why it happens, and to be perfectly honest, we just talk about things too much. To mitigate this I will be implementing the following in 2010:

* Revise my subcoords’ duties, and ensure that each has a clear-cut set of responsibilities, including not only the Societies that they manage, but also the NPCs which are under their care. Doing so will remove any internal ambiguity regarding our individual duties.
* Hire on at least three more subcoords, including one in Brazil, and one in the Midwestern U.S.
* Create a Subcoord position solely to manage the approval process for the In-Character lists

Regarding the various genre materials associated with this office, I can say that they are being revised right now. My primary focus at this time is the Lineage Guide, which is sorely outdated. The scope of the current (original) Lineage Guide is massive, and its revision has given me a new respect for those who designed and created it. However, many 3rd edition materials have presented new Ventrue and updated lineage information (including some interesting changes), and the Guide needs to reflect those changes. The new Lineage Guide will have the following:

* Additional book/page references (where possible), so players will have an easier time of researching the lineages which interest them, and knowing which lineages require a stricter approval process.

Other packets, which will include Dignitas, Genre, and Directorate information (though not necessarily in that order, or that many) will be sent to the org-wide Ventrue lists before going to council, to ensure that the majority of Ventrue players agree with the information presented in them. There will be no sweeping changes in these new resources; wherever possible, only clarifications will be made. It’s hard for me to give an ETA for these revisions, since I anticipate a lot of feedback from current players, but at least one will be finished before the year is over.

Further, this information will be made easily available through another project that the team has been semi-secretly compiling: the Ventrue Wiki. We are still working out some logistics, but Marcus Willis has secured web hosting for us, and the Wiki will soon be available for players and STs to view Dignitas and Genre information, Lore level suggestions, NPC bios, and various other Ventrue-related “articles.” We are currently working on plans for allowing PCs to add their own bios to the wiki. This will most likely require a “leap of faith” on our part, simply having faith in the players to be responsible with the format that a wiki provides. Personally, I am far more interested in the potential that this idea presents than any problems that we might encounter.

In closing, since my first days as a larper, I have thrown myself completely into the game. I became a Narrator after two months, my first eBay purchases were MET books, and I have left jobs and dumped girlfriends on account of “this thing of ours.” My first Vampire character was a Ventrue, and though I have played other clans since then, I have always been involved with the Ventrue in some capacity; it just feels natural to me. Player since August 1997. Portrayed Natasha Eriksen (Toreador), Vanessa Leeds/Liana Vasko (Lasombra), Brie Atrocity (Setite)

Personal Statement:

Let me give you a little bit of knowledge about myself and the Ventrue Clan. For five years I portrayed the character Vanessa Leeds. In the time I played Leeds I had the wonderful opportunity to work on the structure of the Ventrue Directorate from the ground up. Prior to this time there hadn’t been a whole lot of structure on that side of things in the area. I feel that with our Coord (Jon Matras) and the eager players at the time we really made an impact on how the Ventrue played then, and even see our influence in the Ventrue now.

We created the structure of the Directorate in the Midwest and although it has changed and grown, I still look back on the fun we had carving out structure and policy for ourselves. I was the first Praetor of the Midwest (before Lictor was a position PC’s could hold), and the first PC to become a member of the Sorority of Amastris.

Now…on to address the major issues…

I am known to be a fair and impartial individual and would continue to work on that reputation tenfold if elected as Ventrue Coord. I also firmly believe that the players have a right to influence the direction of any given Clan, and would work to ensure that their voices were heard. Any packet proposed would be run by the players first, and in addition to my SubCoord Team I would like to have an open forum of players to discuss changes/improvements/direction of the Clan as a whole. The system was smooth to begin with, and I feel the Clan has “good bones” so to speak. It’s just a matter of getting back to basics and uncovering what is already there. Perhaps the greatest thing I can offer the Ventrue players is a Coordinator who is truly dedicated to all the players, and who genuinely listens to them.

As for the Brazilian Ventrue (and any other Non-US games), I have heard that it has been hard in years past to coordinate with the rest of the Clan. I would make it a top priority to bring the Ventrue “abroad” into better communication with the Ventrue of the States. In addition to a sub-coordinator for the area, I would also make certain I spent as much time as I could personally facilitating interactions. I truly believe we are One WORLD by Night and want to see the Non US chronicles get the involvement and recognition they deserve. I would also be willing to set aside a specific night just for Brazil Ventrue (and Storytellers) to contact me via instant messenger, e-mail and phone.

And finally, in regards to the Sabbat. Ventrue Antitribu seem to get very little attention from what I’ve seen. While they are a smaller representation in the Org than the Camarilla, their stories are still valid and they are very viable characters to play. I plan to work with the Sabbat Coordinator to help enhance and enrich these stories.

A few things I plan to do if elected…

- Dedicate one night a week for at least four hours to be available by phone/chat/e-mail etc... I will certainly be available outside of that time, but it would be a solid block that people would know they could speak to me directly.

- Revamp the Dignitas packet with the help of the players. There needs to be a balance in how Awards are given out and who has control over them.

- Appoint SubCoordinators who have not only a passion for the genre, but an ability to get along and communicate with the Chronicles they are responsible for.

- Support events for regional directorates. I would be willing to work with each area to help them create regular “events”/meetings of the regional directorates. My goal would be to travel in person to as many of these as I could, along with my SubCoord staff. It’s time people were scared of the Ventrue again.

More than anything I want to give power back to the players, and help make their stories as fulfilling as possible. Promotions, demotions, success and death are all part of the stories we tell. I want to give each player the greatest enjoyment they can have from their individual stories.

Thank you for your consideration!

Jogador desde o agosto 1997.

Natasha retratado Eriksen (Toreador),

Vanessa Leeds/Liana Vasko (Lasombra),

Atrocidade do Brie (Setite)

É pessoa do tempo scared do Ventrue outra vez.
