Introduction:

Hello everyone,

I am happy to throw my name in the hat for Tremere Coordinator in the 2009 elections. The Tremere clan has always been one of my favorite clans despite the fact that I haven’t portrayed one for over a decade. Because I haven’t been able to play one recently, I have made sure to keep myself actively engaged in the administrative end of things. I love the mood of clan Tremere. Beyond its magics or powers, I love “the clan is Mother, the clan is Father” mentality. No other clan contains benefit /drawback relationship that can be found with the Pyramid. As the Tremere Coordinator, I would love being able to assist Storytellers in giving players who seek such a relationship the best one available.

I do not want to throw the clan into some strange upheaval where suddenly everything changes and no one knows what’s going on. I believe greatly in continuity of story, so while I plan on adding my own touches upon the Tremere, previous agreements will be honored and players do not need to worry about their work being lost to change over.

Location and Communication:

I live in Wisconsin, but will be moving out to Ohio within a few months. I plan on making it to a variety of games and making myself available to Storytellers for questions and concerns both.

I have near constant email access. Though I admit that I have sometimes slacked when dealing with my own character’s email, I do not afford myself the same leniency with administrative work. When dealing with Coordinator email, I pledge to give at least an acknowledgement, if not an answer, from myself or my sub-coords within one week or less.

People are also more than welcome to contact me via instant messenger if they have either AIM or Gmail.

Goals:

Overall, I want to concern myself with the role play aspects of clan Tremere. This means a continuation of the legacy that was began in fleshing out those Houses and Secret Societies, political goals, as well as working to ensure that all chronicles are on roughly the same page as far as genre is concerned.

Houses and Societies-

Most Apprentices beyond the most novice rankings should be a member of a House. These Houses should be like a fraternity of family members, close knit and well known to each other, but also containing squabbles of such bitter depth that you can only really acquire them by fighting with brothers and sisters. This means making sure that not only new Tremere can get in, but also that once they are in, they have an ample amount of role play and interaction available to them should they want it.

While it is not necessary for even half of the Tremere to have a secret society, I believe that we should definitely have more pcs in them than we do. Like the Houses, these Societies have an opportunity to provide the Tremere Players with a unique role playing experience. To have them and not use them to the extent that we may is a waste.

For the House packet, I’ll be reexamining the qualifications necessary for entrée into the Houses, leaning more towards role play and flavor and less on xp. By allowing role play, as opposed to stats, to be the determining factor, I hope to encourage diversity within the clan.

I would like to see an updated packet much like the house packet, but for the secret societies. This will be one of my action items. It will contain further descriptions of those already known, plus some Societies specific benefits including, but not limited to, access to thaumaturgy they might normally acquire.

Storyteller Genre Forum-

A problem that I’ve noticed can occur in any game, regardless of coast or continent, is a storyteller that does not know as much as they would like to know about OWbN’s version of the clan. We cannot deny that we have moved away from strictly canon and while this is not necessarily a bad thing, we have an obligation to provide new and old storytellers alike with a means to speak amongst themselves and the Coord staff about the differences.

Should I win the election, I will immediately create a group that will be open to every Storyteller who runs the Tremere for their chronicle. This group will have myself, all of my sub-coords, and any storyteller of the Tremere who wishes to be on it.

There we will be able discuss possible changes to the packets, questions on tribunals, what it takes to become a Regent, how apprentices ought behave to Tremere outside their chain, and anything else that comes to mind. I feel that this will help not only the STs, but also players because sometimes they will ask their STs if something is allowed, and the ST regrettably gives the wrong answer.

Brazilian Interactions-

I will be examining the Tremere on both continents and exploring how we might gain better interaction between the two. Possibilities include a better bureaucratic system for proxying into foreign chantries, intercontinental relationships which would include greater communication between the two Councilors, incentives to the players, and a diversifying of the Brazilian Subcoord staff by putting one or more U.S. sub-coords on it to help give a more universal outlook.

There are a lot of obstacles in our way here, but this task is not impossible and it is certainly worth trying for. In succeeding we will go a long way in making the Tremere the single most unified clan in the World of Darkness.

Political Goals-

With the acceptance of the Assamites into the Camarilla, Clan Tremere has suffered political failure. They are no longer the sole purveyor of magics within the sect. It’s time for them to look at their goals long term and decide what it is that they want and how it is that they’re going to get it.

If elected, I will work with the staff, storytellers, and players to come up with overarching goals that can be worked on well for several years at least. We are playing vampire, our characters live with a potential of eternity, and the political desires of a clan so organized as clan Tremere should reflect that.

Beyond the establishment of those goals, we will need to find methods and tactics to achieve them. Were this a less organized clan, these things could be left for the players alone to come up with, but in such a top-down hierarchy it becomes necessary for heavy correspondence between the different levels. Clan Tremere may think as many, but they act as one.

Thaumaturgy Packet-

I will continue to work on the updated packet that Kim Shultz began during her tenure as Tremere Coordinator that will include updated met conversions, house specific rituals, and player made thaumaturgy. I promise that this packet will be propped within my first quarter as Coordinator.

Views:

Custom Thaumaturgy-

I believe that custom Tremere Thaumaturgy should be allowed, but I don’t believe that it should be easy or that it is something that every Tremere is entitled to do. Typically, I separate custom thaumaturgy into two types.

Plot Thaumaturgy: This is a pc or npc made ritual to help solve a plot within a particular game or games. It is invented purely for the sake of role play, costs no xp, and disappears immediately after the plot is solved. I have no issue with this so long as it’s done for the reasons and with the limitations mentioned.

Long Term Creation: This should be extremely difficult to do, but not impossible. I have no desire to regulate the rituals or paths created for usage in a chronicle, but if the players or STs want them to be included in the packet they must fulfill a certain amount of criteria. We will be looking at them in terms of necessity (how much of a use it would be for House and Clan), game balance, and creativity (thaumaturgy should not be limited to duplicating or nullifying other white wolf designed powers).

Sub-Coordinators-

Sub-coordinators are an important and valued asset here on team Tremere. They possess the memory of legacy and combined do a lion’s share of the work. Without them, running clan Tremere would be impossible.

I will happily be allowing those Sub-Coordinators in good standing who wish to stay to stay, but they will need to abide by the one week maximum response time. This will not always mean getting a particular action done in one week, some things simply require more time, but they will let you know that your email has been received and that your request is being processed.

Regional Sub-coords will also need to be able fulfill their duties to the chronicles that they have oversight of. As mentioned, the Tremere are simply too reliant upon their top down hierarchy for the top to be nonresponsive. This applies especially to those players who are portraying Regents and report directly to a Coord level NPC.

On relationships-

Enough people have asked, that I believe it important to be forthcoming about the fact that my girlfriend, Jenn Bahrs, plays a Tremere. In an ideal world, we wouldn’t have to worry about people playing favorites, but it has happened before and I don’t begrudge those people who have asked me about the situation.

While I have no problems killing her character if that is what is necessary to maintain the genre, I will be recusing myself of her standard coordinator needs, allowing her current sub-coords to have jurisdiction over her, and only involve myself when her actions are part of the larger picture.

Coordinator and Storyteller relationship-

I do not want to run your game, nor do I know how you and your players can best have fun. As a coordinator, my job is to assist you in portraying the OWbN version of the Tremere, but I can’t and shouldn’t do it for you. I want you to have as much ability and freedom as a shared sand box can afford.

Sadly, I can’t throw the rule book out and let you do anything. Sometimes we need org rules and org regulations. A problem can become so pervasive within OWbN that we need to put it in the bylaws under lock and key. While I can’t provide for outside circumstances, I will pledge that I will only add to the bylaws because I believe it just and necessary, not simply convenient or a quick fix.

Closing Statement:

One of the things that I've learned over my years of playing in this org is that sometimes we're identified as our characters a little much. Many more people have spoken with Aetius than have spoken with the player behind him. It has been unfortunate, but sometimes I have not made it clear enough that the two of us are not at all similar in disposition. Quite frankly, I play a villain. As Aetius, it is not my intention to be liked, nor is it to be good, kind, or just. I wouldn't like him if I met him on the street and I don't expect anyone else to either. But I am not him.

Personally, I like to think of myself as a pretty nice guy, but nice doesn’t mean that I’ll be a good coordinator. What will help to make me a good coordinator is that I'm approachable, try to see all sides of a discussion, admit when I’m wrong, and care more about finding the right outcome than getting my own way. I hope that those I've worked with see me the same way and invite them, should they feel inclined, to share their opinions of me no matter good or bad.

Thank you.

Personal Statement:

Metas:
[Overall, I want to concern myself with the role play aspects of clan Tremere. This means a continuation of the legacy that was began in fleshing out those Houses and Secret Societies, political goals, as well as working to ensure that all chronicles are on roughly the same page as far as genre is concerned.]

Casas e Sociedades Secretas-
[Houses and Societies-
Every Apprentice who is beyond the most novice rankings should be a member of a House.
[While it is not necessary for even half of the Tremere to have a secret society, I believe that we should definitely have more pcs in them than we do. Like the Houses, these Societies have an opportunity to provide the Tremere Players with a unique role playing experience. To have them and not use them to the extent that we may is a waste.]

[Storyteller Genre Forum-
A problem that I’ve noticed can occur in any game, regardless of coast or continent, is a storyteller that does not know as much as they would like to know about OWbN’s version of the clan. We cannot deny that we have moved away from strictly canon and while this is not necessarily a bad thing, we have an obligation to provide new and old storytellers alike with a means to speak amongst themselves and the Coord staff about the differences.]

[Should I win the election, I will immediately create a group that will be open to every Storyteller who runs the Tremere for their chronicle. This group will have myself, all of my sub-coords, and any storyteller of the Tremere who wishes to be on it.]

[There we will be able discuss possible changes to the packets, questions on tribunals, what it takes to become a Regent, how apprentices ought behave to Tremere outside their chain, and anything else that comes to mind. I feel that this will help not only the STs, but also players because sometimes they will ask their STs if something is allowed, and the ST regrettably gives the wrong answer.]

[Political Goals-
With the acceptance of the Assamites into the Camarilla, Clan Tremere has suffered political failure. They are no longer the sole purveyor of magics within the sect. It’s time for them to look at their goals long term and decide what it is that they want and how it is that they’re going to get it.]

[If elected, I will work with the staff, storytellers, and players to come up with overarching goals that can be worked on well for several years at least. We are playing vampire, our characters live with a potential of eternity, and the political desires of a clan so organized as clan Tremere should reflect that.]

[What you should not expect-
You will not likely see a new thaumaturgy packet under my lead, though I will continue to work on alterations as they’re needed and possible additions from player sources. White Wolf has not printed new material since 2004 and I do not feel the need to reinvent the wheel.]

[Location and Communication:
I live in Wisconsin, but will be moving out to Ohio within a few months. I plan on making it to a variety of games and making myself available to Storytellers for questions and concerns both.]

[I certainly can't promise to visit every chronicle, or even a majority of them, but can't see why this would be necessary anyway. I have near constant email access which I try to be prompt in answering when it deals with an administrative end and always before my own character’s email.]

[People are also more than welcome to contact me via instant messenger if they have either AIM or Gmail.]

[Me as a person:
One of the things that I've learned over my years of playing in this org is that sometimes we're identified as our characters a little much. Many more people have spoken with Aetius than have spoken with the player behind him. As Aetius, it is not my intention to be liked, nor is it to be good, kind, just, or reasonable. I wouldn't like him if I met him on the street and I don't expect anyone else to either. But I am not him.]

[Personally, I like to think of myself as a pretty nice guy. I'm reasonable, try to see all sides of a discussion, and care more about finding the right outcome than getting my own way. I hope that those that I've worked with see me the same way.]

Thank you.

I have been role playing for as long as I can remember, starting with the Star Wars RPG (before d20 system no less) and moving on to Dungeons and Dragons, Rifts, Shadowrun, AD&D first edition, and Dungeons and Dragons Third Edition. By 1999 I was facilitating the fun for every gamer I knew. :)

In 2001 I was introduced to Vampire the Masquerade and found a game that I have loved since then.

As a storyteller and subcoord I have always maintained that it is my job to present the shared universe to the players and assist my fellow storytellers in telling their stories while maintaining a balance between creativity and the genre that has been agreed upon, and in some cases created, by the Org.

Being involved with storytelling for the majority of my time in OWBN has allowed me to understand the frustrations STs can have when interacting with Coords. Alternatively, serving as a Subcoord ensured my understanding of the frustration coordinators have when interacting with some games. These perspectives allow me to maintain a very difficult and, sometimes, controversial Genre. Most importantly my interactions provided me a great deal of empathy with players. I may disagree with their views and perspectives but I listen and take their concerns into consideration offering legitimate and well formed reasons for my decisions rather than a simple denial.

Personal statement:

What intrigues me most about Clan Tremere is its inherent dichotomy. Even the most vanilla character concept offers the opportunity for limitless intrigue in a highly structured clan and hierarchy. How does a predator deal with being told what to do in every facet of its unlife? How does it get ahead and how does it resolve the dissonance between power within the Clan and power within the Camarilla? It is this story that has been the most appealing for me in org. I enjoy watching the various character concepts and their portrayal. I often find myself amazed at the ingenuity, and the sometimes unabashed naiveté of the characters as they scramble for power in the Pyramid.

I feel that there has been a consistent effort to maintain and support the Tremere genre, and I have no desire to disrupt the previous efforts, role play or story from past and present players of Clan Tremere. I would like to expand on that history in the pursuit of new goals for Clan Tremere as well as to provide a continued OOC support system for the clan. Ultimately that goal will depend on the player base. Coordinators can initiate plot lines but it’s the players that move and shape the plot.

What follows is what I would like to accomplish in my tenure as Tremere Coordinator to support current and initiate for Tremere genre within One World By Night.

* Revising the Tremere Thaumaturgy Packet: Throughout the history of the org, Genre, Thaumaturgy and Sorcery packets and resources have been living documents that change to meet the current needs of OWBN. The current genre documents and thaumaturgy packet do require some revision based on ST, Council and player sentiment. I intend to revise those documents to meet the needs of the org, accepting input from STs, Coordinators, Council Members and Players. I also intend to work with everyone who previously contributed to these documents, so that the history of OWBN is preserved.

In this same vein, I'd like to better clarify the system for PC created rituals and paths in order to provide games with suggested time-frames and game mechanics. It requires an acceptable balance between all the things players can imagine and what is well balanced for the org. I plan to implement this by having interested parties join me and my staff on a Google Group forum where we can jointly create what will eventually become a NON-BINDING guide for Players and STs.

*Hunting down and publishing PC created rituals and paths: There are many PC created rituals and paths in One World By Night. Some are Tremere Coordinator approved, some are not. There should be a better catalog of PC created rituals and paths. I would like to create a separate packet of Player Created Rituals and Paths that would be considered the same rarity (5) as they are now, however they would be suggested and available only for games that want to interact with them and the packet could serve as a genre resources for Storytellers dealing with visiting Tremere. While I understand the Org is a bit allergic to the constantly growing arsenal of Clan Tremere, I believe that the creativity of the Tremere players should be voiced and feel that this is a great way to do just that.

*Revising the Houses Packet: One thing I have noticed about the Houses packet is that some Houses have great descriptions and are very detailed in their purpose and function within House and Clan. However, there are some Houses which lack this attention to detail. I would like to add to the already established genre that the packet describes. I do not currently have plans for such major overhauls as adding or removing Houses, but, like other genre resources, I believe this is a living document and should be updated to reflect the needs of the org. Furthermore, I believe PC created Houses are feasible and within Tremere genre. The process of creating a House should be challenging, but possible. Again, I am open to discussions or reasoning from Players, STs and Council members on further changes to the Houses if needed.

*Revising the Tremere Genre Packet: I will be putting together a team of interested parties who want to update and revise the Tremere Genre packet so it may serve as a more current take on OWBN genre. This team does not need to necessarily be comprised solely of myself and my subcoords, and I would welcome those with an interest in Clan Tremere to participate.

*Continue Development of Tremere Genre: While it's true that the Tremere are closely tied to the Camarilla, even within the Oath each of them swear upon embrace, there is more to the Tremere clan than the Camarilla. I intend to support and suggest plot highlighting goals the Tremere have as a clan that supersede their interactions with the Camarilla, while encouraging the intra-clan politics that make playing a Tremere so unique.

In closing, I hope that you can see I am not looking to reinvent the wheel. I am looking to help further establish Tremere goals within OWBN and I am looking forward to working with CMs, STs, and players alike to make this happen. If you have any questions, concerns, or require clarifications about anything in my application, or my views on Genre please don't hesitate to contact me, publicly or privately. I look forward to further establishing the larger picture within OWBN and am excited to be given this opportunity.

Sincerely,
