2018 - Giovanni - Dan Valandingham
Introduction and Background:
My name is Dan Valandingham, and I am running for Giovanni Coordinator. I have been a player in OWBN since 2005, a member of Team Giovanni from 2006 to 2013, and again from 2016 to present, and Giovanni Coordinator from 2009-2011. I live in Iowa, which does mean that I'm a child of the corn and have been to the Field of Dreams. I'm a Ginger, which is perfect for this job because that means I can't be soul stolen, I don't have a soul. I am an aficionado of meme pictures. It is, in fact, my preferred method of communication on social media as my Facebook friends can testify to.
I have been the HST and AST for years in various OWBN games in Iowa and am currently the HST for the Cedar Falls, IA Camarilla game. In mid 2006, I joined team Giovanni as the Necromancy Sub-Coord and served on Team Giovanni until the beginning of the 2013 term, having been Giovanni Coord from 2009-2011. I re-joined team Giovanni during the 2016 term and remain on that team, currently as the Interim Giovanni Coordinator. I am currently a member of the CBC team helping out with Elders and anything else the CBC coord throws my way. Having been involved on both sides of ST/Coordinator dealings, I have an appreciation of what both sides are trying to accomplish. I have found that in most cases reasonable discussion and willingness to compromise by both sides makes things a lot easier.
In my time away from game, I am a mechanical design engineer. I spend the vast majority of my time sitting in front of a computer designing parts. They eventually get turned into something physical to solve a problem. My chosen career has given me a lot of experience in managing timelines, tracking progress, documentation, working as a team, and conflict management. I try to bring the same professionalism and problem solving into my role as a coordinator.
Administrative Experience (Portuguese):
In my opinion, Coordinators should be resource for storytellers, chronicles and players. Coordinators should be a stewards of genre. On occasion, that stewardship involves enforcing of genre in conjunction with council or chronicles. Coordinators are elected to help players and games tell the stories they want to, while still maintaining their genre.
Player Engagement: First and foremost, my highest priority is to engage the Giovanni players. I will be actively looking for tasks for the PCs to get them excited. I want to leverage that excitement to put people to work. Let those who want to be active rise to the top. I want to fill in the holes where we don't have people or have people who aren't active in the PC leadership of the clan. This desire is not limited to the Giovanni, it is my goal to work on this for each of the clans, bloodlines, and families that fall under the auspice of the Giovanni Coordinators office.
Clean up of current items: There are a number of things already going on within the Giovanni Coordinators office that will not be finished by the time elections are over. While I am not going to go into them in depth, keeping an eye on the current ongoing things like the Promise Negotiations, finishing up the updates to the Necromancy and Harbinger packets is firmly on my radar.
Open door policy: As part of engaging players and ST teams, I want to hear from them and give them timely responses. I want to assemble a team that chronicles feel comfortable talking to whenever they have questions, or would like some advise on how to handle anything involving my office. It is my intention to make myself as available as I can to both players and staffs to talk things over and get their input. I sit in front of a computer all day at work. I have 7 email accounts linked to my phone, seriously….feel free to just say ‘Hiya Dan, have you had enough coffee today?’
Genre Packets: As mentioned above, over the last year Team Giovanni has been putting in work to begin updating several of the packets. While some are nearing completion there are several others, like the Samedi and Giovanni genre packets, that are in need of an update.
Cat Pictures: So, I have two adorable cats. I do pledge, should I win, to send at least one picture of my adorable cats to anyone who writes to the Giovanni Coord account asking for them. I make no promise, nor proffer any oaths that they are original pictures. Some of you may get the same pictures. I only have so much room on my phone.
