Rite Write Up

--------------------------

Rite of Severed Strings and Hateful Rebirth

Advanced Wyrm Ritual

Required: The target of the rite must be the Kinfolk of one of the Changing Breeds that does not already possess a full template (such as a Changeling, Mage, Mummy, etc). The target must also be at the Incapacitated health level.

Challenge: To cast this rite, the caster must engage in an Extended Social Challenge vs 15 traits; one challenge per Perm WP of the Target at a casting time of 30 minutes per challenge. Each challenge, regardless of success, costs the caster a perm Social Trait to engage.

Failure: This rite is empowered directly by the Incarna of G'lough. Failure to complete the rite once it has begun results in G'lough’s displeasure. Should the caster fail, they immediately gain the flaws Spirit Notoriety: G'lough and Enemy: G'lough.

Number of Ritualists: 1

Description: The target must first be brought to death’s door, specifically to the Incapacitated health level. As they lay near death or dying at the hands of the ritualist, the caster must take a vial of boiling radioactive material mixed with the blood of the Changing Breed to which the target is kin and force that liquid down the target’s throat.

Effect: The intangible strings of fate are ripped from around the target, rewoven around them to create a destiny that was never theirs to hold. Upon a successful casting of this rite, the following effects occur:

The caster immediately incurs a dot of permanent wyrm taint that may never be bought off as a show of having obtained the spiritual favor of G’Lough for ‘creating’ new life.

The target immediately enters a first change as if they had been true-born. The target immediately gains the Flaw Cursed Rebirth [Forced into a life that was never yours to hold, the wyrm is never far from your heart. It will always be harder for you to ignore when compared to your peers. Avoiding the call of the wyrm is almost unavoidable; you will always lose on ties when making Wyrm Thrall challenges.] and a flaw from the following list that may also be bought off with time and xp:

  • Amnesia

  • Nightmare

  • Derangement

  • Taint

  • Lunacy

  • Haunted

  • Shattered Veil

  • Dark Secret

  • Compulsion

  • Curse

  • Wyrm Taint

Detailed Reasoning

----------------------------------

These are the bylaws to go along with the Message from New Mexico Consequence Thread.

This rite serves three purposes.

The first is to acknowledge the networking done by PCs. This concept started as a grass roots project among a small group of PCs in an effort to help reinforce the forces of the wyrm to create a stronger alliance between the wyrm’s allies. It is an ingenious work of art that deserves a chance at a larger audience.

The second is to put a tool in the hands of STs to allow for IC justification for older start date PCs. One of the largest problems with attracting new blood to Changing Breeds is the fact you have to start play (most often) as a teenager and for a population of larpers that’s in their late 20s to early 40s, that just doesn’t have a huge appeal and can be hard to engage. While w20 offered avenues to late changes, nothing has yet passed through council to bring those new changes to the larger scale. This rite serves that purpose and also carries on with OWBN specific continuity.

The third, and most important, is to create a widespread sense of consequence as the Wyrm responds to the forces of Gaian. There have been many many alliances forged over the past three years by the forces of good. It’s time the forces of evil struck back.

re: Perm Wyrm Taint

---------------------------------------

Several CMs and STs have expressed a concern that there needs to be a long lasting consequence for being part of this rite.

While I understand this concern, I'm not comfortable with making it a permanent dot of wyrm taint that can never be bought off as this will forever isolate the PC from Sept Life. As this rite is in part a way to bring in new blood to the genre, I do not feel comfortable creating something out there that would sever them from a huge chunk of the gameplay experience.

Instead, I am proposing a permanent 'loss on ties' to all wyrm thrall challenges. Normally you would win them, as they're simples. Now? You'll lose them unless you flat out win.

I did the math with a subcoord and it creates a roughly 44% chance you will wyrm thrall every time you frenzy. This is a long lasting consequence that brings the hurt but also makes the characters playable in the way werewolf is meant to be played.
